I’m tired of not being sure when I can trust reviewing sites. Rotten Tomatoes is an amazing site that takes the majority of reviewers opinions on a film and averages that out to give the Fresh or Rotten stamp. Metacritic does the same. That seems like the absolute best way for a viewer to decide if they should spend their cash on that movie, but I have always been hesitant to give these sites complete approval.
I first realized this when I watched White Noise for the first time. Now I rather enjoyed the movie, not that I thought it was going to sweep award season or anything, but I liked it. I didn’t feel like my time was wasted and that should be pretty important, yes? But when I headed to Rotten Tomatoes, I was surprised to see that White Noise had a Whopping 9%. That’s bad, no that’s terrible, atrocious.
And in that lies my problem with Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, if your not careful you may overlook decent movies. These sites are for professional critics. They get paid to watch movies, slamming a majority of them in the process and seemingly forgetting the fact that many of us just want to be entertained. Sometimes nothing but big explosions is a good thing. Other times a sappy, tearjerker is just what you need. In your heart you know that this may not be a revolutionary movie that will go in the archives as one of the best ever, and your fine with that.
My goal with this blog is to be the Every Man reviewer. I’m not worried about every plot hole getting plugged. I’m worried about being entertained, whether that be by a big budget action movie, or a thought provoking courtroom drama that’s 95% talk. I love any and all genres of film, and I want to give people a place to talk about how WE feel about films, not just the hyper critical movie critic.
